2008-09 saw France’s highest ever number of foreign student enrollments, with 266,400 young people choosing to study in the European nation, an increase of 2.3% on the previous year.

Research from the Ministry of Higher Education and Research found that Morocco was the largest provider of foreign students to France, totalling around 30,000 individuals.

12% of France’s 1.4 million strong student population are foreign, more than a third of whom are based in Paris or the Ile-de-France region.

44% of those foreign students hailed from Africa, followed by 24% from Asia, 22.6% from Europe, and 8% from North and South America.

The research found that the largest foreign group, Moroccan students, were most likely to study science, engineering and technology subjects. Their 27,100 Chinese counterparts, a steadily increasing figure, are “well represented” in business, engineering and arts schools.

Almost 40% of foreign students in France are studying doctorates.

Look out for our i-studentadvisor Europe guide later this year, covering France and a variety of other European nations.

The emergency plan includes reforming the country’s universities in a bid to boost their science and technology workforce.

According to the 2008 Unesco report The Science and Technology System of the Kingdom of Morocco, 40 tertiary institutions are operating, including 14 universities as well as private higher education institutions and polytechnics. Official statistics put the number of university students at 277,428 in 2004.

The overhaul is to be funded by the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education, Professional Training and Scientific Research with support from the French Development Agency, African Development Bank, European Investment Bank, World Bank and European Commission.

The funding will be chanelled into improving performance, developing scientific research and teaching quality to bring Moroccan universities up to an international standard. The government has targeted accrediting 92% of its universities as research institutions by 2012, compared with 69% in 2008.

For more information on a2 international education fairs view their e-brochure — www.i-studentadvisor.com/a2fairs

The Sheraton Casablanca hotel opened its door to the a2 fair on Wednesday, November 18th after a registration and welcome event the previous evening. The fair moved on to its second leg today and traveled south to the city of Marrakesh where the final two days of the fair are being held at the Le Méridien N’Fis Hotel. A full itinerary of the Morocco fair is available to download here.

i-studentadvisor (i-studentgroup) have so far received a fantastic response from the international students at both locations where they have been demonstrating the i-studentadvisor online publications and inviting the students to participate in the brand new i-studentadvisor enquiry service. The i-studentenquiry service has been created to help international students in their initial search for the right college, university or English language school to suit their individual needs. It is simple to use — just fill out the online form and our personal matching service will search hundreds of institutions to find the right match for their individual needs, they will then be contacted directly by the institutions with relevant information. visit www.i-studentenquiry.com

i-studentadvisor will be attending a number of a2 fairs over the course of 2010 and would love to see you there. For a calendar of upcoming fairs and details on how to register visit www.aafair.com.
