Today, Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education Julia Gillard spoke on behalf of the Australian Government confirming the country’s interest in the welfare of Indian students.
Gillard’s statement was released after a series of violent incidents involving Indian international students, which include assault and burglary. Gillard’s statement said: “I want to send a message loud and clear that international students are very welcome in this nation and Australia will not tolerate discrimination against or victimisation of any of our international students”.
To ensure the safety of international students in Australia Gillard announced the launch of a new safety scheme, “The government will invite international student representatives to participate in a round table to discuss issues affecting their study experience such as accommodation, welfare and safety. With over 430 000 international students visiting Australia annually, it is important to me that their views and concerns are heard and addressed by government.”
This story which was also reported on the Indian Express website has provoked a very interesting debate among their Indian readers, Raj Thackrey writes: “These types of crimes are happening every day in India. You do not have right to blame the law and order of other countries when your own country is in tatters.” Whereas Jayakar Dalavai thinks action from the Australian Government is imperative, “It is therefore imperative for the governments to set special legal protection to foreign students and bring quicker resolution of cases against such local urchins who are a disgrace to Australia”.
