In a recent speech at the British Council,  UK Business Secretary Vince Cable said it was “vital” that British universities continued to attract overseas students to the country, claiming that only “bogus” applications and poor quality colleges would be affected by recent changes to student visa regulations.

Germany has been named as the most supportive country for overseas students, in a report undertaken by the British Council. The Global Gauge Study ranks university systems on degree quality, recognition of qualifications and support for overseas students.

LONDON TOPS GLOBAL LIST OF OPEN CITIES IN NEW SURVEY

London has topped a survey looking at the capacity of cities around the world to attract and benefit from international populations. The British Council’s OPENCities project compares 26 cities worldwide, looking at factors including diversity policies, quality of life and education.

CHINESE SPEAKERS SHOW OFF THEIR X FACTOR

Students from schools across England and Wales will show off their linguistic skills at the X Factor-style regional heat of the HSBC/British Council Mandarin Chinese Speaking Competition at the London School of Economics. The 300 students will compete on Monday 13 December, to win a place in the final at the British Museum in March.

The British Council has named Melissa Ilboudo, 24, from Burkina Faso, International Student of the Year. Melissa, who is studying International Development at the University of East Anglia, fought off competition from over 1,300 students from 121 countries to win the competition known as Shine!
