International student numbers around the world are increasing despite the economic downturn, according to figures from Unesco’s Institute for Statistics.

Following just days after the visit of Chinese President, Hu Jintao, US President Barrack Obama has pledged to double the number of Americans studying in China by 2014. The move was backed by Michelle Obama, who called the proposed increase in exchanges “a key component of this administrations’ foreign policy agenda” in a speech at Howard University.
