UK education leaders have strongly opposed government plans to cut visas for international students studying below degree level. Vice-chancellors body Universities UK has lead the attack calling the cuts “damaging and dangerous” with one university head going as far as to say they could be “catastrophic”.

If you are applying to university in an English speaking country and English is not your first language, you may need to meet certain language requirements dictated by the institution. In the majority of cases this involves taking a standardised test. There are two main English language tests accepted by universities around the world, IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). More and more US colleges and universities are turning to conditional admissions as a legitimate form of attracting international students. The institutions are now seeing conditional admission as part of a more comprehensive recruiting strategy as a growing number move away from a policy of recruiting students purely on their own terms.

The Home Office in the UK is to carry out a review of student visas after the number of students coming to the UK rose by a third last year. Figures showed that the number of student visas granted rose by 75,000 to 300,000 in the twelve months prior to March 2010.

New figures revealed by the British Council now suggest that there are 513,570 international students currently studying at UK universities, opposed to 389,330 as previously thought.
