One of the worlds largest social networking sites, Facebook, has announced a new Fellowship Programme to support students at US institutions studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, System Architecture, or a related area.

The $30,000 stipend will be accompanied by $5K per year toward conference attendance and travel, $5K toward a personal computer and the opportunity to apply for a paid summer internship.

A statement from Facebook said:

“Every day Facebook confronts the most complex technical problems and we believe that close relationships with the academy will enable us to address many of these problems at a fundamental level and solve them. As part of our ongoing commitment to academic relations, we are pleased to announce the creation of the Facebook Fellowship programme to support graduate students in the 2010-2011 school year.

We are interested in a wide range of academic topics, including the following topical areas:

Internet Economics: auction theory and algorithmic game theory relevant to online advertising auctions.

Cloud Computing: storage, databases, and optimization for computing in a massively distributed environment.

Social Computing: models, algorithms and systems around social networks, social media, social search and collaborative environments.

Data Mining and Machine Learning: learning algorithms, feature generation, and evaluation methods to produce effective online and offline models of behavioral signals.

Systems: hardware, operating system, runtime, and language support for fast, scalable, efficient data centers.

Information Retrieval: search algorithms, information extraction, question answering, cross-lingual retrieval and multimedia retrieval”

Perhaps of most interest to readers of i-studentadvisor is the news that the Fellowship has been made available to non-US students as well, provided they are enrolled at a US university and fulfill the other relevant criteria.

Applications must be submitted in full by February 15th, 2010. For more information on the Fellowship and details on how to apply, visit Facebook here.

ABET is the premier accreditation authority for institutions offering degree programmes in applied science, computing, engineering and technology.

Mark H Weichold, Dean and CEO of Texas A&M at Qatar, said the accreditation was a welcome endorsement of the university’s first-rate engineering programmes in Education City.

“Academic excellence is our business,” Weichold said, “ABET accreditation is a key marker of the quality to which we aspire.” The university’s bachelor of science programmes in chemical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and petroleum engineering all received accreditation.

Dr R Bowen Loftin, Interim President of Texas A&M University, lauded the news. “We are pleased that Texas A&M’s Qatar campus has been accredited by ABET, which validates something that we have known for a long time — our Qatar engineering graduates are of the highest calibre” Loftin said. “We appreciate the long-standing partnership Texas A&M has had with the Qatar Foundation as we work together in developing a world-class, comprehensive engineering programme in Qatar.”

“All of us must recognise that education and innovation will be the currency of the 21st century and in too many Muslim communities there remains under-investment in these areas”, the President said.

Obama plans to promote cooperation between US and Islamic universities through exchange programmes and scholarships as well as online and distance learning for muslim students.

See University World News for full story.

Mohammad al-Momani, a political science professor at Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan said last week in advance of the President’s visit:

“The level of optimism is pretty significant. We haven’t seen this for a long time. People believe that Obama understands that there is a need for concrete action on the Arab-Israeli conflict and that he has shown … significant commitment to [resolving] the conflict.”

The focus of this plan is on the science and technology sector and coincides with the administrations earlier announcement to concentrate funding on science and engineering education, i-studentadvisor will be covering this story in the upcoming issue of i-SECT, our Science, Engineering, Computing and Technology magazine which will be online in July.
