NAFSA: Association of International Educators, announced the winners of this years Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization award. Five institutions have received the awards for building on their long-standing commitments to international education as well as taking advantage of a more recent interest in the global community. A further three institutions have also been recognised and with the Senator Paul Simon Spotlight Award. Together these awards comprise the 2011 Senator Paul Simon Awards for Campus Internationalization.

An Iraqi government initiative has seen hundreds of Iraqi students enrolled at universities and colleges across the US and the UK in an effort to start rebuilding Iraq’s once-renowned higher education system. The Iraq Education Initiative intends to provide education opportunities for over 600 young men and women this year before eventually expanding into Australia, Canada, France and Japan.

During a commencement address Michelle Obama gave on Sunday for George Washington University’s class of 2010, she focused on the value of international education and urged each student to go global. The First Lady recognized the contributions many of the GW graduates have made both locally and globally, challenged them to “[k]eep being you, to keep doing what you’re doing. Just take it global.” Janice Mulholland of the NAFSA blog reports.
