HAITI EARTHQUAKE: RESOURCES FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATORS

A 7.0 earthquake hit an area near Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Thankfully, the Tsunami Watch for Haiti and neighbouring islands issued by the Pacific Tsunami Alert Center has expired. There is currently no clear estimate of casualties, but the Red Cross has issued a preliminary report and estimate that the earthquake has affected at least 3 million people. We extend our condolences and solidarity to the people of Haiti and to our colleagues in international education.
SALMAN RUSHDIE TO SPEAK AT NAFSA 2010 CONFERENCE IN KANSAS CITY

Renowned novelist and essayist Salman Rushdie will be the keynote speaker at the opening plenary of NAFSA’s 2010 conference in Kansas City. Rushdie will address conference attendees on Tuesday, June 1, at the Kansas City Convention Center.

NAFSA REPORT URGES CHANGE IN US VISA LEGISLATION

NAFSA Association of International Educators released a report yesterday urging for a change in US immigration and visa policy to make the United States more open to international students and recognise the importance of migrant workers and students to the country.

This week is officially International Education week. The event is a joint initiative of US Department of State and the US Department of Education, which aims to promote programmes that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

The Universities Fighting World Hunger (UFWH) e-brochure is now available online at www.i-studentadvisor.com/ufwh. The brochure was designed and created by ISA Media after UFWH won a free e-brochure competition at the 2009 NAFSA Annual Conference and Expo.
