FIRST PRIVATE BRITISH UNIVERSITY FOR THIRTY YEARS

It was announced today that Britain is to have its first private university for over thirty years. BPP, which offers law and business degrees at fourteen sites across the UK, will be given university college status with immediate effect and be allowed to grant degrees in a limited range of subjects.

Could the UK be about to see an expansion in the numbers of private universities? They could, according to Paul Marshall, head of the 1994 Group of universities. Marshall believes that we are about to see a shift towards “private providers entering the market place”.
