US RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES UNDER THREAT

There has been much news recently about how the global economic crisis is affecting higher education. From the recent news in the UK that the number of places for undergraduate students is going to be cut to the reduction in funding for many European universities, the news across the sector has not been good. The latest fear in the US is that research universities are under threat as a result of the recession and social changes.

South Africa has forged a new higher education union after the key organisations from the university and polytechnic sectors have merged, University World News reported yesterday.

Eduniversal’s 2009 convention in Cape Town announced the global top business school rankings of the year crowning Harvard as the cream of the crop amongst 1000 other contending business schools. London Business School was voted second and Copenhagen Business School third.
WOMEN THRIVE IN HIGHER EDUCATION WORLDWIDE

The male dominance of the university system is on the decline as female graduates outnumber men in 75 out of 98 countries, University World News reported. According to Unesco’s 2009 Global Education Digest, the number of females in tertiary education sextupled between 1970 and 2009 with male enrolments quadrupling in the same period.

The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Headquarters in Paris will open its doors to over 1,000 academics and government officials on Sunday 5th July for the opening of the 2009 UNESCO World Conference on Higher Education.
