The Institute of International Education- Ethiopia and the Embassy of the United States of America joined forces with the Ministry of Education to sponsor a two-day conference, “Building Sustainable U.S.-Ethiopian University Partnerships,” for Ethiopians and American higher education officials.

Enrolments from Chinese students to US universities rose by almost 30% in the academic year 2009-2010, according to the Institute of International Education’s annual Open Doors report. However, overall the number of international students choosing to study in America rose by only 3% to 690,923 with first-time student figures rising by only 1%. This has prompted concerns that the US may be becoming too reliant on Chinese students.

The recent economic recession sparked redundancies in nearly all occupations, however a new report from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development shows that in many nations it was found that college graduates were less likely to become unemployed than their less-educated counterparts.

There has been much news recently about how the global economic crisis is affecting higher education. From the recent news in the UK that the number of places for undergraduate students is going to be cut to the reduction in funding for many European universities, the news across the sector has not been good. The latest fear in the US is that research universities are under threat as a result of the recession and social changes.
