From a historical base of graphic, interior and industrial design, the range of design courses has broadened, especially in the areas of new media and the performing arts.
The courses, once rigidly divided between universities offering degrees, and TAFE colleges offering diplomas and certificates, are now a rich, interlaced tapestry of creative education.
This has acted to fuel Australia’s enviable reputation as a source of high-quality creativity in the design, arts, entertainment and manufacturing sectors of this multicultural society.
The Design Institute of Australia (DIA) is Australia’s only multidisciplinary, membership-based organisation representing all categories of qualified Australian professional designers.
It provides networking support for Australian design communities, acts as a corporate contact point between the design professions, government and industry to facilitate industry wide initiatives, and maintains and delivers information about the industry to its members, design professionals and the general community.
It also liaises frequently with major Australian design educational institutions, with most design disciplines now having degree status university courses available in many states of Australia.
Australian degree courses for design are now often four years in duration and can be taken with honours, master’s and even doctorate (PhD) extensions.
Design training is also available through Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions and through private suppliers for some courses.
These courses may lead to certificate or diploma qualifications or statements of course completion, and may only require one or two years study.
In keeping with professional training currently available, the DIA recommends four years of tertiary design training to degree level.
As elsewhere in the world, employers who apply formal assessment of applicants prior to hiring are more likely to place importance on degree qualification.
An employer can be more confident that graduates have an understanding of the historical precedents in the industry, a broad understanding of techniques, materials and tools, and have absorbed the standards and values by which the industry operates.
The DIA refrains from recommending specific courses or institutions in Australia, but comprehensive information is available from such publications as the annual ‘Art and Design Education Resource Guide’ at www.dgdesignnetwork.com.au
Since 1983, the Art and Design Education Resource Guide has provided a comprehensive guide to all of the courses offered, including a showcase of graduate work.
Additional information can be obtained by contacting local Australian universities and TAFE colleges.
