The Application Process and Entry Requirements

THE APPLICATION PROCESS AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applying to institutions abroad can be a lengthy process, so make sure you start gathering materials for your application early and research all the application deadlines for your chosen institutions thoroughly. Being organised will help to make the process easier.

i-studentadvisorHow to apply

International students must apply to institutions in Australia directly or through an education agent. You must obtain an application form - contact institutions to request one or visit their websites. You may have to send this form either to a local agent of the institution in your country, or to the international office of the institution.

i-studentadvisorWhat documents are needed?

You will be required to provide supporting documents with your application form. These are likely to include:

  • Details of your study history, including evidence of your qualifications
  • Evidence of your English language capability such as an exam certificate
  • You may have to pay an application fee

The institution will then advise you if your application has been successful and will send you a letter of offer. Once you have accepted, subject to any pre-assessment requirements, you will be issued with a Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE), which is the only accepted evidence of enrolment for the purpose of visa applications.

i-studentadvisorEntry requirements

In order to be accepted onto a course in Australia, you will need to have the necessary qualifications. These requirements may vary between institutions, but generally you will need a minimum of:

  • For undergraduate - equivalent of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (year 12)
  • For postgraduate - at least one undergraduate degree
  • For VET - generally no exams, but may require relevant work experience

To search for courses and their entry requirements, you can use Study in Australia’s Study Wizard tool.

i-studentadvisorEnglish language requirements

You will be required to prove your English language capability, both for a student visa and for acceptance to an institution.

When processing your visa application, the Australian Government will recognise: the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE), the Cambridge English: Advanced test (CAE) from Cambridge ESOL, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Occupational English Test (OET). For more information about tests accepted for visa applications, please click here.

The level of English skill required for your visa application may be different to the level required by your institution for acceptance onto a course - you should contact your chosen institution to find out their entry requirements.
