Travelling to Canada

TRAVELLING TO CANADA

It is important to consider your travel arrangements to Canada early, and it is a good idea to have onward travel to your institution or accommodation arranged before departing. You are advised to carry the address and phone number of your accommodation in your hand luggage to make it easier to ask for directions or to get a taxi. Whilst it is advisable to research the best mode of transport and book tickets before departing for Canada, you should wait until you have confirmed your university place, accommodation and visa before booking anything.

There are a large number of international airports throughout Canada. Here is a guide to the busiest  international airports (all figures are in CAD$):

Toronto Pearson International Airport is around eighteen miles, or a 20-30 minute drive, from downtown Toronto. A large number of domestic and international destinations are available including airports in Asia, Europe, Australia and South America.

Onward travel:

  • There are a number of different bus services operating from the airport, most of which go to downtown Toronto and surrounding areas, including the Toronto Airport Express bus to downtown Toronto
  • Taxis are available to pre-book or to take from the airport. These are subject to set metered fares, but will sometimes offer a flat rate for longer journeys

i-studentadvisorVancouver International Airport

Vancouver International Airport is under ten miles from Vancouver city centre. A number of domestic and international destinations are available, including airports in Asia, Europe, Australia and South America.

Onward travel:

  • There are a number of scheduled bus services available from the airport to and from Whistler, Victoria on Vancouver island and Washington state (USA). Tickets can be pre-booked online, or bought at the airport
  • A rail service, Canada Line, connects the airport to downtown Vancouver (which takes approximately 26 minutes) and downtown Richmond (approx. eighteen minutes)
  • A shuttle service is available from the airport to downtown hotels, which can be taken from the airport. The average cost for one adult, one way, is around $14
  • Licensed taxis can be taken from the airport and do not need to be pre-booked. Fares are on a metered rate, and the average fare to downtown Vancouver is around $30

i-studentadvisorMontréal-Trudeau International Airport

Montréal-Trudeau International Airport is located approximately twelve miles from downtown Montreal. A number of domestic and international destinations are available including airports in the USA, Europe and South America.

Onward travel:

  • There is an express bus service from the airport to downtown Montreal. The journey to the Central Bus Station takes approximately 35 minutes, and a one way trip costs approximately $8. A regular bus service is also available, costing $3. Buses to further destinations can be taken from the bus station
  • There are a number of shuttle services to nearby areas, tickets for which can be bought in the airport or on board
  • VIA rail offers a rail service to other areas of Canada. There is a free minibus service between the airport and the rail station (a journey of about two kilometres)
  • Taxis can be taken from the airport. Fares are metered and cost a minimum of $16.25, apart from journeys to downtown which are fixed at approximately $38

i-studentadvisorCalgary International Airport

Calgary International Airport is approximately eleven miles from downtown Calgary. Flights to and from Calgary are mainly from the USA and Europe, as well as regional flights within Canada.

Onward travel:

  • There is a public bus service available from the airport to some destinations in Calgary. There are also a number of bus operators offering longer-distance journeys
  • There is a regular shuttle bus service between the airport and designated stops in Calgary city. Tickets can be pre-booked online or bought in the airport. There is also a Red Arrow Motorcoach service to nearby cities, costing approximately $25
  • Licensed taxis can be taken from the airport. Fares are metered, but the approximate fare to downtown Calgary is around $45
