WHY THE UK?
The UK has one of the strongest traditions of higher education in the world and top-class institutions can be found across the country. Nineteen of the QS World University Rankings top 100 universities in 2010 are in the UK. The UK also offers international students much more than just a first-rate education:
Recognised worldwide
Qualifications from UK institutions are known and respected around the world for their quality. As well as the most famous names like Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial, the traditional excellence of UK universities is spread throughout many more across the country.
Europe on the doorstep
Although not part of mainland Europe, the UK is a member of the EU and access to the continent is easier than it has ever been. Low cost airlines provide flights to most European destinations, taking just a few hours and leaving from airports across the UK. The Channel Tunnel connecting the UK and France also makes continental travel easier than ever before.
Multicultural society
The UK is one of the most diverse nations on earth in terms of race, ethnicity and religion. People from every country in the world now call the UK home, with many small but integrated communities across the UK. This is great news for international students as it means no matter where you’re from you are sure to meet others from back home. The UK is also very tolerant of different religions and faiths so there are plenty of places of worship for most of the major religions.
Scholarships and funding
Financing your studies is one of the most important factors in your decision and scholarships are always an important consideration for many students. There are some scholarships available to international students, so it is always worth asking your chosen institution.
Health and safety
The UK is a very safe country with excellent law and order and has one of the oldest and most respected police forces in the world. The UK also has a National Health Service, which provides free or affordable healthcare. International students have access to the NHS if they are: from the EU, on a course lasting more than six months or from a country with a reciprocal agreement with the UK.
