Standardised Tests

STANDARDISED TESTS

Standardised tests are designed to measure whether you are academically ready for college or university, and are a compulsory part of applications for nearly every higher education institution in the USA.

Currently there are two standardised tests for you to choose between - the SAT and the ACT. If you are undecided about which one to take, it is always best for you to consult your college counsellor or ask the institutions you plan to apply to in order to find out whether their admissions departments have a preference.

i-studentadvisorSAT

The SAT is a test, administered by the College Board, which is designed to assess your knowledge on a range of subjects that you will need in order to succeed at college. The SAT can be taken more than once - typically students take the SAT for the first time during their junior year, and then a second time during their senior year.

The test measures ability in ten sections, including Critical Reading, Mathematics and Writing. Nine of the sections are scored on a scale of 200 to 800, and the tenth section, which is un-scored, is used to determine fairness and equality on the test.

  • The Critical reading section includes reading passages and sentence completion
  • The Writing section includes a short essay and multiple-choice questions on improving grammar and usage
  • The Mathematics section includes questions on arithmetic operations, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability

SAT Subject Tests

In addition, you can choose to take the SAT Subject Tests. The Subject Tests are a great way of demonstrating your knowledge and proficiency in a particular subject area. Some colleges require certain Subject Tests in order for students to gain admission to their courses.

In total there are twenty Subject Tests to choose from: Literature, US History, World History, Mathematics Level 1, Mathematics Level 2, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, plus twelve different language options.
