USA GUIDE

Approximately 30% of all international students choose to study in the USA. A combination of world-class institutions, state-of-the-art facilities, an excellent academic reputation and a diverse mix of cultures from all over the world makes it the number one destination for international students. Plus, due to its size, there's plenty of choice.

Travelling to the USA

TRAVELLING TO THE USA

It is important to consider your travel arrangements to the USA early and it is a good idea to have onward travel to your institution or accommodation arranged before departing. You are advised to carry the address and phone number of your accommodation in your hand luggage to make it easier to ask for directions or to get a taxi. Whilst it is advisable to research the best mode of transport and book tickets before departing, you should wait until you have confirmed your university place, accommodation and visa before booking anything.

The USA is vast and it is therefore impossible to detail all the transport options in the country.  However, below is some general information about travelling to, and around, the USA.

Short distances

Public transport in some areas may be limited, though larger cities will have some public bus and train services. Elsewhere in the USA, public transport may even be non-existent. Some cities will also have an underground rail system or tramway. Taxis can also be easily taken in larger cities, though may be expensive.

Long distances

Often, air travel is the easiest way to travel around the US, due to the large distances between cities and states. Trains and buses are also available, but are not generally considered the best way to travel, as they can take several days and are not necessarily cheaper than flying. Most train services throughout the USA will be operated by Amtrak, who also provide some bus services. The Greyhound Bus Line offers inter-city and transcontinental bus services.

i-studentadvisorOn arrival - Registration

All visitors to the USA must pass through a biometric registration, named US-VISIT. The Department of Homeland Security registers most foreign visitors granted entry into the USA. Registration consists of a digital photo and index finger electronic prints. For further information, visit - www.dhs.gov/us-visit
