AUSTRALIA: WORKING

All initial student visas are granted with the condition of 'No Work.' However, international students can apply for permission to work once they have commenced a course of study in Australia.

If they are granted permission to work as a student (condition 8105), a new visa label will be put in their passport, and they may:

  • work for a maximum of 20 hours a week during the term, not including work that is a formal registered part of your course; and
  • unlimited hours during recognised vacation periods

Students can apply online for a student visa with permission to work. However, their college or university must notify the immigration department electronically to confirm that the student has commenced their course. For further information on electronic visas: www.immi.gov.au/e_visa/students.htm

Tax File Number (TFN)
Students need to obtain a Tax File Number (like a social security number) to work in Australia. They can apply for a tax file number online if they are a temporary visitor and have a visa that allows them the right to work in Australia. For further information, visit the Australia Tax Office website.
